Editor-in-Chief Mission Statement
Sign-Image is a journal of communication studies,
journal of the Hungarian Society for Communication Studies
Jel-Kép is the leading journal of Hungarian communication and media research. Its history and the analysis of the contents of the individual issues allow us to describe and present the history of Hungarian communication research from the 1980s onwards. In addition to its intrinsic value, this is an argument in favour of maintaining and running Jel-Kép for researchers and professionals working in the field. It was then that a younger generation of communication researchers joined the editorial board.
With the death of the editor-in-chief and the resignation of the former editorial board, the journal reached another milestone. Maintaining continuity is the responsibility of all of us. Just as the change was successful in 2013 and the journal has a new platform and mission, so the situation in 2023 must again be addressed in a forward-looking way. In managing change, the new editorial board must not only take the place of the former editor-in-chief and editorial board, but also renew the journal of Hungarian communication studies in a way that roots change in tradition. The most important expectation is that the journal's mission, values and previous objectives of providing a space for interdisciplinary approaches to communication and media research should be met. For us, an interdisciplinary approach means including the co-disciplines of communication in the understanding of communication that the journal has represented (sociology, linguistics, anthropology, human ethnology, etc.).
From February 2024, the editor-in-chief will be a team rather than an editor-in-chief. The team will be composed of Márta Korpics, Associate Professor, Mónika Andok, Associate Professor and Kornél Myat, a communications PR specialist. There is no tradition of joint editors-in-chief in Hungarian journals, but there are many examples in international journals. All three of us research and teach in the field of communication and media research, and we are also practitioners. All three of us have a strong professional portfolio in communication and media research, and all three of us have a PhD in Social Communication from the Doctoral Programme in Social Communication founded by Özséb Horányi, which in itself is an indication and guarantee of this link. All three of us consider it important to showcase the results of domestic communication and media research, of which Jel-Kép is a key workshop and platform. All three of us have been publishing and editing volumes for decades and have contributed as guest editors to various journal issues. We see our different professional backgrounds as an advantage in running the journal.
In our work as editors-in-chief, we want to stay true to the values of the journal. We also want to reach out to the professional community and academic workshops of communication and media research in Hungary and invite them to work together for a common and fruitful outcome!
