אֵֽשֶׁת־חַ֭יִל as a Warrior of Everyday Life

Abstract

In my academic research, I examine the poem found in Proverbs 31:10-31, which is often referred to as the “Praise of the Virtuous Woman” with a particular focus on its exegetical analysis. My aim is to provide a deeper perspective by highlighting one specific interpretation within the poem. I analyze the phrases in the text and their relationship with counterparts used in military contexts. Since the praise of the virtuous woman contains numerous lexemes that suggest that the poem applies martial terminology to civilian life. With this perspective, the text encourages us to view this ideal woman described in this passage as a heroic character, a warrior who fights the battles of everyday life within her own household. Indeed, this poem may also be understood as a kind of victory hymn, with the slight difference that it does not celebrate the deeds of soldiers, but rather praises the moral and just work of the woman. Within the proverb, I focus on the following terms: verse 10 (חַ֭יִל), verse 11 (שָׁלָל), verse 14 (לֶחֶם), verse 15 (טֶרֶף), verse 17 (חגר), verse 19 (יָ֭דֶיהָ שִׁלְּחָ֣ה), verse 25 (עֹז), and verse 27 (צפה). By comparing these expressions with their occurrences elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible, I come to the conclusion that the poem presents the virtuous woman as a warrior of everyday life.
