What does it Mean to be Merciful?

Mercy is a divine virtue, or at the very least the hallmark of a good king, since power is required to exercise it. Jesus is merciful toward those who turn to him, and in this he clearly points to the Father; furthermore, in his parables he also presents to his listeners a compassionate God, whose mercy is not bound by any human standard. For the believer, following Jesus means, among other things, imitating this: practicing mercy indirectly, in connection with worship, or directly, by seeing the needs of one’s fellow human beings.
