József Kárász: The student preacher: István Nagy – Gábor Haller – László Stéphán – József Kárász: It gets dark early Sárospatak, 1932. 129–137.
Synopsis
In December 1932, an anthology titled Korán sötétedik [It Gets Dark Early] was published, typeset using the fonts of the Sárospatak Reformed College.
The authors of the volume were theology students at the Sárospatak seminary. Due to the spirit, social criticism, (perceived or real) political stance, and the distinctive form of their search for God expressed in their poems, short stories and narratives, the leadership of the Cistibiscan Reformed Church District, which maintained the institution, expelled two of the four students through disciplinary action.
In issue 4 of the 1934 volume of Irodalomtörténeti Közlemények [Publications on Literary History], the anthology Korán sötétedik [It Gets Dark Early] was included in the literary history repertory for the year 1933, and several book reviews were also published about it.
The three short stories by first-year theology student József Kárász, published in the anthology, received distinctly positive reviews; several critics referred to the young author as an intellectual disciple of Zsigmond Móricz and Dezső Szabó.
In his short story titled A legátus [The Student Preacher], József Kárász presents criticism of the church through the story of a theology student’s Pentecost legation, portraying a contemporary village pastor, a future minister, and the congregation. With radical expressions and exaggerated depictions, he intended to urge the renewal of the church and its servants.
