Dear Reader, you are holding a special volume entitled Literary Portraits of Pastors, which grew out of courses of the same name at the Reformed Theological University in Sárospatak and is intended to supplement this work. The topic itself is interesting, since in the fields of cultural history and literary studies—not to mention church history—the question of how the personality and social role of the pastor or priest, the conflict between the ideas and realities associated with it are reflected in works considered to be belles-lettres, and through these, in the social consciousness of a given era. The case studies in this volume undertake to examine this question. Beyond the topic itself, however, the perspectives of the approach are also unique, as the spectrum of the study ranges from the 17th century to contemporary literature, and within this, we encounter both well-known names and works as well as unknown ones. The circle of authors is also unique: not only are they specialists in their respective fields, but most of them also work at the intersection of literature, history, and theology, and this multiple identity results in a complex perspective. On the other hand, many of them are not only theoretical but also practical experts who, by applying the perspectives of their teaching work, can make this collection of studies particularly useful for higher education.
Finally, what makes this volume special is that, as the first publication of SRHE Renius University Press, it gives tangible form to the goals that our publishing house wishes to achieve: we plan to publish high-quality and practical publications that are committed to Reformed values but support Protestant culture and higher education with an ecumenical, scientific openness and interdisciplinary approach.
