About the Press

The Senate of the Reformed Theological University of Sárospatak established Renius University Press by Resolution No. 30/2025. Its main task is to publish the scientific results of researchers at the Kálmán Újszászy Reformed Heritage Research Institute and the university's lecturers and research fellows, as well as works related to the history of the College and the culture of the region.
The publisher is named after György Renius, the first master of the Sárospatak printing house. Johannes Amos Comenius arrived in Sárospatak at the end of October 1650 to take up his teaching position, and at the same time, György Renius probably arrived with him. We know nothing about his life and work in earlier years. He came to Sárospatak as an unknown, most likely from Leszno, and the end of his life is also shrouded in mystery. Comenius left Sárospatak in 1654, and two years later, György Renius also left the printing house, but only for a while, perhaps due to illness, because his name appears on a few more publications from Sárospatak until 1657. However, from 1657 onwards, his name does not appear on any foreign or domestic publications. Based on his publications, however, it is clear that Renius was an excellent professional, and his talent flourished in Sárospatak, where his publications clearly increased the significance of the four years Comenius spent in Patak in the history of the College and laid the foundations for the later centuries of book culture in Patak.
Renius is a rare family name of Latin origin, derived from renatus, meaning reborn or reborn.
